Take me to the Theatre de la Mode...

Theatre de la mode was a touring exhibition of nearly two hundred dolls in elaborate sets created by Parisian couturiers that banded together in 1945 after World War II.

They created one of the most telling and fully complete representations of fashion splendour. With the world in restoration and  city in great need, the Theatre de la mode introduced  to the world, apparel of ‘perfection in miniature’ with not a single detail missing.

The exhibition premiered in Paris and later toured Europe and America, with the final stop in San Francisco were the dolls remained until the early 1950’s.

In the 1990’s the dolls embarked on a second world tour visiting Paris, New York, Baltimore, Portland and Tokyo.

In class we got the opportunity to create our own dolls based on our Cultural signposts research. The outfit I have created for my doll focuses on a combination of the new red carpet look and the modern day Little Black dress. She is a modern day film star with a chic sense of style.

How to make:

Fleurpoms/tissue paper pom poms

Fleurpoms make a great decoration piece for any type of event or even just a room decoration!

What you need:

10 sheets of tissue paper (any colour you desire)
Scissors
1 piece of wire
Fishing wire, string or ribbon

Instructions

1.Cut scallop shape along edge of tissue paper and fold into 4 sections.

2.Fold forwards and then backwards along the crease lines to form an accordion fold.

3.Wrap the wire around the centre of the folded tissue and secure it by twisting. This will later be used as an anchor point for hanging.

4.Separate layers, pulling away from centre one at a time. Then hold the Fleurpom from the wire centre and fluff bottom sections to create a full ball effect.

5.Using fishing line or ribbon attach and knot to twisted wire at centre of Fleurpom. Then hang at desired length.

Or wear as a headpiece!

CELEBRITY INFLUENCE IN FASHION

Celebrity style impacts society, the public people simply watch tv, go to the movies, pick up the latest gossip and fashion magazines or surf the internet. Media influence is an all important factor in today's society.

Examples of how celebrity trends have appeared in the cycle of fashion during the 20th century:

1990's- "The Rachel haircut" introduced to the TV screens by Jennifer Aniston. A trend now seen on the likes of Kate Moss and Rachel McAdams

1960's- The Little Black dress (LBD) made famous by Audrey Hepburn on the silver screens. A now must have item for every women's wardrobe.

The 1950's- Red carpet fashion. The Glamourous, beautiful film people, such as Grace Kelly strike a pose with the most desirable evening gowns. Today red carpet fashion is still one of the most important events for designers and the celebrities.

The 1900's- Fashion magazines such as Vogue began their publications. Today, they still remain a top source for fashion and celebrity influence.

The 1990's- 'Sex and the City' fashion, made famous by TV character Carrie Bradshaw and friends. Nowadays TV personalities like Whitney Port of MTV reality program 'The City' are being 'coined' as the new 'Carrie Bradshaw' with her quirky fashion, big city life and career.

1980's- Magazine publications love to cover every aspect of 'Royal News...and fashion'. What started with every eye on Princess Diana has now turned to Princess-to-be Kate Middleton. Times have changed, but the fashion remains slightly the same!
